During the COVID-19 crisis, I decided to continue documenting the different Hasidim communities of Montreal. Closely linked to the communities of New York, they felt a big impact right away.
The different aspects of the crisis as forced everybody to adapt but maybe more for the Hasidim. The public health directive of social distancing have forced members of the different communities to pray outside. The directive prohibits any gathering in all places of worship for all religions. The synagogues have been ordered to close.
I found fascinating the reversal of perspective of confinement and its effect on the Hasidim communities. While we must shift our public life to confines of our private spaces, the Hasidim must reveal themselves to the eyes of their neighbors, they must put their very private rituals to the theatre of the streets.
